'Protect your head!': Bike helmet saves young MN kid hit by car

Callaway, Minn. (Valley News Live) — A cracked helmet is a reminder of the importance of bike safety.Without a helmet, a Baker County family said their 3-year-old daughter would have suffered more than a few cuts and bruises after being hit by a car last week.
England said the bike ride home of her 3-year-old twins Vanessa and Betty and their cousin last Thursday, March 31, turned into a race. The trio hit the pavement at top speed on 1st Avenue in Callaway, Minnesota.
England said the rule proved to be a blessing, as the thrill of winning that game overwhelmed Betty’s good safety habits.
“(Her father) yelled for Betty to stop, but she was so excited she won the race that she didn’t hear him stop at the stop sign in time and it ended up being a bit on the road. That’s where the car was. the best time,” England said.
While the car was traveling at 20 to 30 miles per hour, it was still enough to knock Betty to the ground and crash her beloved ‘Paw Patrol’ bike, but doctors told the family it could have been worse if it weren’t for her Unicorn helmet.
“We probably won’t take her home. It could be permanent brain damage, which makes sense because it’s a very important part of your skull and it’s so small,” England said.
The family keeps Betty’s broken helmet, at least for now, because they want to use it to urge parents across the valley to make sure your kids not only have a helmet, but they always wear it, too.
“They may not want to wear it, neither of us want to, but even a kid hitting the curb and falling can be devastating,” England said.
England said the driver who accidentally hit Betty stayed at the scene and later gave the three-year-old a new pair of shoes and a new helmet.England said that while Betty was a little timid when she was out on the street, the incident didn’t ruin her bike or scooter ride. She said Sunday was the twins’ fourth birthday, which could mean a replacement bike is already on the way.
